Is there an ideal keyword density?

No. Google has said for years that there's no magic percentage, and modern search systems understand synonyms and related terms. Density is still a useful sanity check in two directions: if your main phrase never appears, the page may not clearly say what it's about; if one phrase makes up several percent of the words, the copy probably reads as stuffed, which hurts both readers and rankings.

A better test is whether the page answers the questions people actually ask, in plain language. That is also what AI assistants look for when choosing what to cite. See refreshing content for AI search.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good keyword density?

There isn't a target number. As a rough check, if your main phrase makes up more than 2 to 3 percent of the words, rewrite some mentions with natural variations.

How is keyword density calculated?

Occurrences of the keyword, multiplied by the number of words in it, divided by the total word count, as a percentage.

Does keyword stuffing hurt SEO?

Yes. Google's spam policies name keyword stuffing, and stuffed copy reads badly, which lowers engagement and conversions.

Is this keyword density checker free?

Yes, with no signup. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
