Magento 2 & Adobe Commerce

Magento SEO
agency.

SEOArmy is a Magento SEO agency for retailers running Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source on large, complex catalogs. Magento can do almost anything, and on most stores it is doing several things you never intended: generating crawl traps from layered navigation, serving slow templates and juggling extensions that fight each other. We bring order to the crawl, speed up the storefront and protect rankings through upgrades and migrations.

Big catalogs,
bigger crawl problems.

Magento sites tend to be large, long-lived and heavily customized. The SEO issues come from that history as much as from the platform.

Layered navigation traps

Filter combinations that multiply into millions of URLs.

Why it matters

Googlebot spends its visits on filter permutations while new products wait weeks to be discovered.

Crawl budget and indexing

Index coverage across very large catalogs.

Why it matters

At this scale, which URLs get crawled matters as much as which ones are optimized.

Storefront performance

Luma-based themes, Hyvä and full-page cache.

Why it matters

Heavy legacy front ends are a common cause of poor Core Web Vitals on Magento. A modern theme often fixes more than any plugin.

Multi-store and hreflang

Websites, stores and store views across regions.

Why it matters

Each store view can publish its own URLs and copy. Without hreflang, regional versions compete with each other.

Extension sprawl

Third-party modules for SEO, search and layout.

Why it matters

Overlapping extensions rewrite URLs, canonicals and meta tags in conflicting ways, and slow every upgrade.

Migrations and replatforming

Magento 1 to 2, and Magento to other platforms.

Why it matters

The move is where years of rankings are most often lost. Redirect mapping is the safeguard.

The Magento
playbook.

On a big Magento store, we treat SEO as a crawl and engineering problem first and a content problem second. Content only pays once Google can reach it efficiently.

01
LOGS

See what Googlebot really does

Server log analysis shows where crawlers spend their time: filter URLs, search results pages, old URL rewrites or the products you care about. It turns opinions about crawl budget into evidence.

02
CONTROL

Rein in the URL space

Configuration and code changes to layered navigation, canonicals, URL rewrites and robots rules, so the crawlable site matches the catalog you want indexed.

03
SPEED

Modernize the front end

Full-page cache and Varnish tuning, image handling and, where the business case holds, a move from Luma to a lighter theme such as Hyvä.

04
SCALE

Templates, content and authority

Category and product templates that work across thousands of SKUs, buying guides, a monthly product video and digital PR that earns links to key categories.

SEO for Magento
at catalog scale.

Layered navigation and crawl budget

Magento’s layered navigation lets shoppers filter categories by any attribute set as filterable, and each selection adds parameters to the URL. Combine a few filters with sorting, page size and pagination, and a single category can expose thousands of variations. On a catalog of tens of thousands of SKUs that adds up to a URL space far larger than the store itself. Google does not crawl all of it, but it spends a lot of time trying, and that time comes out of crawls of new and updated products. We use server logs and Search Console crawl stats to measure the problem, then control it with a mix of canonical settings, nofollowed or non-link filter controls, robots rules for parameter patterns and, for the filters with real demand, static landing pages that carry their own copy.

Magento’s own configuration matters here as well. Whether product URLs include category paths, whether canonical tags are enabled for products and categories, and how URL rewrites are generated all affect duplication. Stores that have been running for years often carry a very large URL rewrite table full of stale paths. We clean that up carefully, because some old rewrites still receive links and traffic. Catalog search runs on OpenSearch on current releases, or Elasticsearch on older 2.4 versions; internal search result pages should usually stay out of the index while their query data feeds our keyword research.

Adobe Commerce, Open Source and the front end

Adobe Commerce, the licensed edition, and Magento Open Source share the same core, so most SEO work is identical. Adobe Commerce adds features such as content staging and B2B tools, and runs on Adobe’s cloud infrastructure for many merchants. On either edition, the default Luma front end is heavy, and Core Web Vitals suffer under the weight of extensions that each add their own JavaScript. Hyvä, a modern Magento theme built on a much lighter stack, has become a common route to a faster storefront. It is a real project rather than a switch, since extensions need compatible versions, so we help weigh it against cheaper improvements first. On very large stores, every change goes through tickets, a test environment and an agreed release window, the same as any other engineering work.

Multi-store setups add another layer. Magento organizes stores into websites, stores and store views, and each store view can carry its own language, URL keys and content. Regional versions that share English copy, such as the US and UK, compete with each other unless hreflang tells search engines which to show where. We generate hreflang from the store configuration, check that every alternate returns a live page, and make sure translated store views have translated URL keys and metadata rather than inherited defaults.

Migrations off Magento 1 and replatforming

Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020, and stores still on it are running unsupported software. Moving to Magento 2, or replatforming to Shopify or BigCommerce, changes URLs, templates and often site structure all at once. We build a complete redirect map from the old site, using crawls, analytics and backlink data so no page with traffic or links is missed. We then benchmark rankings, test redirects on staging, and monitor crawl errors and indexing daily after launch. If your new platform is Shopify or BigCommerce, the same team stays with you after the move.

How we protect rankings
through a replatform.

Most traffic losses after a Magento migration come from the same few mistakes. These steps are part of every migration we support.

Complete redirect mapEvery old URL with traffic, rankings or backlinks mapped one-to-one to its closest new equivalent, never bulk-redirected to the homepage.
Pre-launch crawl of stagingTitles, canonicals, schema, internal links and hreflang checked on the new build before launch, with blocking issues fixed first.
Benchmarks and monitoringRankings, organic revenue and index coverage captured before launch and watched closely afterward, so problems are found in days rather than months.

Magento SEO
FAQs.

Yes, both. They share the same core codebase, so layered navigation, URL rewrites, canonicals and performance work look very similar. Adobe Commerce adds features such as content staging, B2B tools and cloud hosting, which we account for in the plan.
Plan a move. Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020 and no longer receives official security patches. The choice is usually between Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce and a different platform such as Shopify or BigCommerce. Whichever you choose, the SEO risk is in the URL changes, so a full redirect map and post-launch monitoring are essential.
We measure how much crawling filter URLs consume, then reduce it with canonical settings, non-crawlable filter links, robots rules for parameter patterns and noindex where appropriate. Filter combinations with genuine search demand are turned into static landing pages with their own copy so they can rank properly.
Often, for speed. Hyvä replaces the heavy default front end with a much lighter one, which usually improves Core Web Vitals. It is a significant project because extensions need compatible versions, so we compare it with cheaper fixes such as cache tuning and extension cleanup before recommending it.
Log file analysis, layered navigation and URL control, canonical and rewrite cleanup, multi-store hreflang, performance and theme work, extension audits, category and product template optimization, migration planning, content, a monthly product video, link earning and AI search visibility tracking.
Yes. Most of our Magento clients already have a development agency or in-house team. We provide detailed, testable tickets, review changes on staging and fit into your release schedule rather than working around it.
