How long should titles and meta descriptions be?

Google truncates by pixel width, not character count. On desktop, titles are cut at roughly 600 pixels (usually 50 to 60 characters) and descriptions at roughly 920 pixels across two lines (usually 150 to 160 characters). On mobile, more of the title can show but the description is often shorter. This preview measures real pixel widths in a Google-like font.

Google also rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks another part of the page describes it better, so treat these as your best proposal rather than a guarantee. Titles that clearly describe the page, include the main term naturally and avoid keyword stuffing are rewritten less often.

What makes a snippet earn the click

  • The searcher's words near the start of the title.
  • A specific promise: area, speed, price or outcome.
  • A description that answers the query and gives a reason to choose you.
  • Your brand at the end of the title, if there is room.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters should a title tag be?

Aim for about 50 to 60 characters. Google truncates desktop titles at roughly 600 pixels, so wide letters shorten the limit and narrow ones extend it.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150 to 160 characters on desktop. Put the key message in the first 120 characters, since mobile often shows less.

Why does Google show a different title?

Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks other text on the page describes it better, often when titles are vague, stuffed with keywords or don't match the page.
