Most comparisons of AI search tools line up feature checklists side by side, which makes very different products look interchangeable. They are not. The category splits four ways, and knowing which one you need eliminates most of the shortlist immediately.
The four categories
Visibility trackers
Ask a fixed set of prompts to assistants on a schedule and record whether you are named. This is what most people mean by an AI search tool. Useful once your prompt list outgrows manual checking.
Citation and source analysers
Track which sources assistants cite in your category rather than tracking you. Frequently the more actionable purchase, because it tells you where to go and get represented.
Content graders
Score a page for machine legibility: structure, entity clarity, answerable passages. Valuable for teams publishing at volume, largely redundant if someone on the team already knows the principles.
Crawler and log analysers
Show which AI crawlers reach your site and what they fetch. Often the cheapest genuine insight available, and frequently obtainable from your own server logs for nothing.
Which one you actually need
A rough decision rule that holds up in practice:
- If you have never measured any of this, start with manual checks and a spreadsheet. You will learn which prompts matter, which is the input that determines whether any paid tool is useful.
- If you are managing this seriously and checking more than twenty or thirty prompts, buy a visibility tracker.
- If you know you are invisible and want to know why, buy citation analysis instead. It answers the actionable question.
- If you publish at volume with a distributed team, a content grader pays for itself in consistency.
- If your traffic is unexplained or you suspect blocking, look at logs before buying anything.

What no tool can tell you
Three limits apply across the whole category, regardless of price.
None of them can tell you why a model chose a source. Model reasoning is not exposed, so any causal claim is inference from correlation.
None of them measures the whole system. They sample a non-deterministic interface, so precision has a ceiling no amount of engineering removes.
None of them will fix your entity consistency, which is usually the actual problem. Tools measure; the work is separate.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI search optimization tool is best?
It depends which of the four categories you need: visibility tracking, citation analysis, content grading or crawler analysis. Citation analysis tends to be the most actionable because it tells you where to get represented rather than only scoring your current position.
Do I need a paid tool at all?
Not at first. Asking your twenty most important buyer questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini every fortnight and recording the answers gets you most of the value, and teaches you which prompts matter before you pay for someone else's prompt set.
